First Sunday after Christmas / Primer Domingo después de la Navidad
Nuestra lectura del evangelio para hoy está llena del movimiento del Espíritu Santo. Se ve como el Espíritu ha movido a cuatro personas a venir al templo para tener un encuentro divino con Dios encarnado. Hoy, quiero ofrecer una pequeña reflexión sobre cada uno de estas personas. Y también quiero ofrecerles unas preguntas meditativas para ayudarnos a buscar el movimiento del Espíritu Santo en nuestras propias vidas.
Our gospel lesson for today is full of the movement of the Holy Spirit. We can see how the Spirit has moved these four people to come to the temple for a divine experience of the incarnate God. Today, I want to offer a brief reflection about each of these people. And I also want to offer a few questions for meditation to help us look for how the Holy Spirit might be moving in each of our own lives.
Los primeros a llegar en el escenario hoy son María y José. Habían viajado desde Nazaret, a Belén, y ahora estaban llegando a Jerusalén. Es fácil imaginar que estaban agotados, desgastados del camino. María apenas dio a luz y ya estaban viajando otra vez! Pero ellos sabían que habían recibido una misión de Dios muy especial. Hacían caso a los mensajeros de Dios que vinieron a ellos con la llamada divina; y respondieron por hacer todo lo que Dios pidió de ellos. Confiaban que Dios andaba con ellos. Y por su fe en Dios, eran sensibles al movimiento del Espíritu Santo.
Por lo tanto, no se asustaban – como haríamos nosotros – cuando un desconocido se acercó y tomó su bebé en sus brazos. Reconocían que este hombre fue también guiado por el Espíritu. Y además, ellos ya sabían que su presencia como guardianes del niño Cristo era en si un mensaje de esperanza para Simeón y para todo el pueblo de Israel.
Nosotros en nuestras vidas, también somos llamados por Dios a hacer su voluntad – aunque no sea de manera tan dramática. Y también respondemos. Por ejemplo, la bienvenida que aquí han dado a refugiados de Centroamerica es pura obra de Dios. Como María y José, ustedes reconocen que llevan consigo algo de bendición para los demás: el amor de Dios, un lugar de seguridad, y unos brazos abiertos. Tuve el privilegio de ayudar aquí con este proyecto hacen un par de semanas, y sé que no se puede negar la presencia del Espíritu en los encuentros con esas familias.
Entonces, les ofresco estas preguntas: ¿Cuáles son otras maneras u ocasiones en que decimos que ‘sí’ a la llamada de Dios? ¿Como somos la esperanza de Cristo para los demás?
The first people to arrive on the scene today are Mary and Joseph. They had traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and now they have finally arrived in Jerusalem. It’s easy to imagine how exhausted they must have been, worn out from their journey. Mary had barely given birth to Jesus, and here they were on the road again! But they knew that God had given them a particular mission to carry out. They had listened to the angelic messengers who came to them with the divine call; and they responded by doing all that God had asked of them. They trusted that God walked with them on their journeys. And because of their faith in God, they were attuned to the movement of the Holy Spirit.
This is why they didn’t freak out – like you or I probably would have done – when a total stranger came up to them in the temple and took their baby in his arms. They recognized that this man had also been guided by the Spirit to be in that place. And Mary and Joseph also knew that their presence as the bearers of Christ in and of itself was a message of hope for Simeon and for the people of Israel.
In our own lives, God also calls us to certain kinds of mission – even if it may not happen in such a dramatic way. And we also respond. A great example is the welcome that you all have given here to asylum-seekers from Central America. That is totally the work of God. Just like Mary and Joseph, you all have recognized that you have blessings to give to others: the love of God, a place of safety, and a welcome with open arms. I had the privilege of helping welcome some asylum seekers here a couple of weeks ago, and no one could deny that the Spirit was very present in the encounters we had with those families.
So, thinking about Mary and Joseph, I offer you these two questions: What are other ways that we say “yes” to God’s call? What are ways that we embody the hope of Christ for others?
Simeón había esperado toda su vida para este momento. Era un hombre justo y devoto, atento siempre al Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu le había revelado que no moriría sin antes ver al Cristo del Señor; y por lo tanto, vivía en la esperanza y la espera de ese momento. Fue el mismo Espíritu que le guió al templo ese día para cumplir su promesa. Llegando en el templo, Simeón observó a una pobre familia, cansada de viaje, ofreciendo un par de tórtolas en gratitud por su niño, porque no tenían suficiente para comprar un cordero. El Espíritu Santo abrió los ojos de Simeón para ver que en esta pequeña familia vivía una esperanza encarnada; vio que el mismo niño, que ni cumplía dos semanas de vida, era el Cristo del Señor por el cual había esperado toda su vida. Maravillado por esta bendición, Simeón tomó el niño en sus brazos, y empezó a cantar:
“Según tu palabra, Soberano Señor,
ya puedes despedir a tu siervo en paz.
Porque han visto mis ojos tu salvación,
que has preparado a la vista de todos los pueblos:
luz que ilumina a las naciones
y gloria de tu pueblo Israel.”
Simeón se encontró con el divino Cristo en el templo ese día. Y hoy, nosotros hemos venido aquí a este templo, la iglesia, buscando a Cristo, movidos por el Espíritu Santo, aunque no nos demos cuenta. ¿Cómo es que tú sientes la presencia de Cristo aquí? El Espíritu Santo siempre nos está hablando, siempre nos está llamando; ¿A qué te llama hoy?
Simeon had waited all the long years of his life for this moment. He was a righteous and devout man, attentive to the call of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah; and so he lived in hope and expectation of that moment. It was this same Spirit that led him to the temple that day so that this promise might be fulfilled. In the temple, Simeon saw a poor family, tired from their journey, offering up a pair of turtledoves in gratitude for their infant son, because they couldn’t afford to buy a lamb. The Holy Spirit opened his eyes to see that an embodied hope lived in this family; he saw that this tiny child, not even two weeks old, was the very same Messiah he had been waiting for his whole life. Marvelling at this wondrous blessing, Simeon was moved to take the child into his arms, and he began to sing:
“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
according to your word;
for my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.”
That day in the temple, Simeon unexpectedly found himself face to face with the divine Christ he had been waiting for so long. We too come here this day, looking to meet Christ. We too are moved by the Holy Spirit, even when we don’t realize it. So how do you feel Christ encountering you today? The Holy Spirit is always speaking to us, always calling us, just like Simeon. Where might you be called to go today?
Escuchando la canción de Simeón mientras cargaba al niño Cristo en sus brazos, llegó Ana. Ana había dedicado su vida al servicio de Dios después de ser viuda. Estaba siempre en el templo, y día y noche adoraba a Dios con ayunos y oraciones. Había perdido la esperanza de tener una familia propia, y entonces puso toda su esperanza en la salvación de Dios. Cuando escuchó a Simeón cantar, supo que Dios había hecho algo maravilloso. Sintió la alegría de Simeón y de esta pequeña familia, y empezó a predicar y a compartir con todos los demás la esperanza encarnada que llegó en forma de un niño. Ana regocijaba por todo lo que el Espíritu estaba haciendo; y ese mismo Espíritu le animó a compartir las buenas nuevas con todos.
Aunque claro, dudo que ninguno de nosotros está aquí día y noche orando y ayunando, sé que somos miembros fieles de la comunidad de Dios. Jaja, nuestra presencia aquí hoy es evidencia de eso. El domingo después de la navidad, el día antes el año nuevo, somos pocos que quieren venir a la iglesia. Pero los que vienen están aquí porque saben que encontrarán algo divino aquí. Entonces, ¿Cómo es que el Espíritu te habla por medio de esta comunidad? ¿Cómo puedes compartir la alegría y la esperanza navideña con los demás, como hizo Ana?
As Simeon was singing his song of praise, cradling the Christ child in his arms, Anna came into the scene. Anna had dedicated her life to God’s service after being widowed after only seven years of marriage. She was always in the temple, and day and night she worshiped God with prayer and fasting. She had given up the hope of having a family of her own; instead, she saved her hope for the coming salvation of God. When she heard Simeon singing, she knew that God had done something wonderful. She too felt Simeon’s joy and the joy of this little family at the presence of Christ in their midst, and she began to preach and to share with others the incarnate hope that had come in the form of this tiny child. Anna’s joy at the work of the Spirit among them renewed her prophetic joy, and moved her to share this good news with everyone.
Heh, although none of us probably spend our days and nights here in the church praying and fasting, we are still faithful members of God’s holy community. Just the fact that we are here – the Sunday after Christmas, on New Year’s Eve, when most people choose to stay home – is itself a sign of faithfulness, and a sign that we come here expecting to be encountered once again by the Spirit. So I’ll ask you to think about this: How is it that the Spirit speaks to you by means of this community? How can you share the joy and the hope of what God is doing in the world with others, like Anna did?
Después de estos encuentros divinos en el templo, todos regresaron a sus casas y a sus vidas diarias. Pero sus vidas habían sido cambiadas irrevocablemente por estos momentos en Jerusalén. Simeón había esperado toda su vida el cumplimiento de una promesa que por fin se realizó. Ana había visto la esperanza y la salvación de Dios, las cuales renovaron su llamada profética. José y María regresaron a Nazaret con su bebé, pensando en todo lo que los demás habían dicho de él. Y dentro de poco tiempo sus vidas fueron interrumpidas otra vez por la visita de tres magos!
Igual hoy, nosotros regresaremos a nuestras propias casas y a nuestras propias vidas. Pero igual, el Espíritu Santo nos acompañara y seguirá transformándonos, interrumpiendo nuestras vidas con momentos de alegría y esperanza. En este nuevo año que está por empezar, los invito a todos a escuchar la voz del Espíritu y buscar su movimiento en sus vidas. Espero que Dios los acompañe y el Cristo del Señor alegre sus corazones con esperanza y paz.
After all these divine encounters in the temple, everyone in the story goes back to their houses and to their daily lives. But their lives have been irrevocably changed by these moments in Jerusalem. Simeon’s whole life had been waiting for the fulfilment of a promise that had now been realized. Anna had now seen the hope and salvation of God, which gave her new energy to preach the good news. Joseph and Mary returned to Nazareth with their baby, with all the things others had said about him ringing in their ears. And even their newly transformed lives would soon be interrupted again by the arrival of wisemen bearing gifts!
Today, all of us will go back to our houses and to our own daily lives. But just like with Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and Anna, the Holy Spirit will go with us; it will continue to transform us and to interrupt our lives with unexpected moments of joy and hope. As this new year begins, I want to invite all of you to listen for the voice of that Spirit and to wait with expectation for it to be at work in your own lives. May God go with each of you into this new year, and may Christ brighten your hearts with his hope and his peace. Happy new year! Feliz año nuevo! Amen.
